Goa is a top beach resort destination in India. I arrived in Goa via train from Mumbai. It was a 10 hour sleeper train trip. Check out my video below that is full of tips about that trip. Goa is divided into two parts: North Goa and South Goa. What you are looking for on your trip will shape where you stay.
The North is the active and tourist-centered area. You will find a lot to do in North Goa, including beach activities and a lively nightlife scene. One interesting fact about Goa is that it offers the cheapest alcohol in India. You can buy drinks here for less than in any other area. I am not a drinker, but people told me repeatedly that Goa—North Goa in particular—was the place to drink and party. I spent a few days in the North, and it was a fun place to spend time. The area is touristy, but I do not count that as a negative. There are many shops and restaurants that provide a good experience. Check out the video I made about the hotel I stayed at in North Goa.
South Goa has a completely different feel. I spent a few days there about a month before the tourist season started, and it was very quiet. Only one beach shack was open for business, and only a few people spent time on the beach. If you want a slow, relaxed beach getaway, South Goa may be a good fit. I got bored after a few days and shortened my time in the South. I moved to the North to find more action, and I was glad I did. The South is not as developed as the North, so it has a much slower pace. This may be perfect for some travelers. Overall, I found the entire Goa area really interesting.
